Bruce Girton, 77, of Austin, Texas, passed away on January 17, 2007 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 14, 2007 at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 15 at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Monday, May 14, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City. In lieu of flowers, you may honor Bruce with memorials to the church of your choice or to the Humane Society at www.nsus.org. or Humane Society of the US, Attn: Kindred Spirits Program, 2100 L. St. NW STE 599, Washington DC 20037-1595. Bruce Girton was born on November 14, 1929 in Hampton, IA, the son of Russell and Margaret Girton. He joined the family feed business in Mason City in 1951 and raised his family there. In 1982, Bruce retired from the family business and became treasurer of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church, moving to Des Moines with Gloria. Upon Bruce?s retirement from that position, Bruce and Gloria moved from Des Moines, Iowa to Paradise Park in Harlingen, Texas. In 2006, for health reasons, they moved to Austin, Texas, to live near their son, Paul, and his family. Bruce is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria. He is also survived by two sons and a daughter and two grandsons: Paul and his wife Deisy and son Walter, Judson and his wife Miriam, and Margaret Harding and her husband, Mark and son Jonathon. He was preceded in death by a son, Russell, and his parents.
