Aulis Sonike

February 19, 1933 — October 24, 2008

MASON CITY: Aulis Sonike, 75 of Mason City, died Friday, October 24, 2008 at the Good Shepherd Health Center. Memorial services will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday (October 31, 2008) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with Pastor Kent Mechler, Good Shepherd Health Center- Chaplain officiating. Inurnment will be held in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs with Veterans Honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. There will be a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Aulis Sonike memorial fund.

Aulis Sonike was born February 19, 1933 the son of August and Marie (Rosenstengel) Sonike in Vake-Maarja, Estonia where he attended grade school. He graduated from high school in Germany and lived in a displaced persons camp in Germany with his mother and siblings until they came to Mason City, Iowa in 1950. He voluntarily enlisted in the Army in 1953 and served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1955. He worked for Holt Plumbing, Sears, and Black Plumbing until he suffered a stroke in 1994. Aulis was a kind-hearted and generous person and can be best described as the best uncle any kid could ever have.

He is survived by his sister, Leili Hedrick of Nora Springs; brother, Walter Sonike of Mason City; four nephews, one niece, and grand-nephews and nieces.


He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Milvi; and infant brothers, Heldur and Eelar.

Memorials may be directed to the Aulis Sonike memorial fund.

Cemetery:
Inurnment will be held in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs

Visitation:
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday.
