My deepest sympathy goes out to Mary Lou and family with John's passing. Heaven has gained an angel! We were fortunate to live next door to John & Mary Lou in Mason City, IA from 1995 to 2000. They were THE best neighbors we could have had......kind, caring, giving, funny, warm-hearted and our kids thought the world of them. We moved to Sioux City, IA in 2000 but kept in contact. John and Mary Lou proudly gave us a tour of Ropes Park in Onawa one summer day on one of their visits back to Onawa. Living only thirty miles from Onawa, I have met numerous Onawa residents who, when asked if they ever knew John Ropes, said he was a generous, caring and great man who did much for his home town of Onawa. They said Onawa greatly benefitted from his generosity. While he did so much in his career to truly help mankind, on the national, state, and local level, there is no question that he has already taken on even more important tasks with Jesus in heaven. He did so much in his short 89 years here on earth.....imagine what he will accomplish with Jesus for eternity! What a great legacy for a great man. I feel blessed to have known him!

With many heartfelt thoughts and deepest sympathy. John was a great man, a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He was respected and his colleagues and friends alike. His many years of dedicated service to the State of Iowa in Des Moines and later with the Federal Government in Washington -- were exemplary and greatly appreciated. We will always have many cherished memories of John. He improved our lives just knowing him. Leon and Martin
